What are Open Graph tags?
Open Graph tags are lines of code in the head of your page that tell Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and other platforms what title, image and description to use when your link is shared.
Without these tags, social networks guess the preview from your page, and the guess is often ugly: a random image, a messy title, or no description at all.
How to generate the tags
- Enter the page URL you want people to share.
- Write a clear title and a short description.
- Add the image URL you want to appear in the preview.
- Choose the page type and your site name.
- Turn on Twitter cards if you want X (Twitter) ready tags too.
- Copy the code and paste it into the head of your page.
Choosing a good share image
Images are the first thing people notice in a shared link. Use a 1200 by 630 pixel image under 1 MB. Keep the file compressed so the preview loads fast on slow connections.
- Use text on the image only if it stays readable at small sizes.
- Avoid relying on screenshots; make a purpose-built banner.
- Test the preview after publishing, not just before.
Testing your work
After adding the tags, paste your URL into the Facebook Sharing Debugger or the X Card Validator. Both tools fetch your page fresh and show exactly what a new share will look like.
